Facebook's most recent video on the metaverse was centered around an art museum. The metaverse could massively change art as we know it. In many ways it already has.
Art has been part of virtual worlds since it's beginnings. Right now you can easily go to virtual museums, exhibits, art installations etc.
A current trend is nft galleries. These are virtual galleries were people display their nft's. Even Sotheby's is getting into the act, as they now have a location in decentraland. As nft's evolve and become more popular, going to a gallery would be like going to an Instagram page.
Secondlife, vrchat and decentraland all have museums you can visit. One of the best is Vordun in Secondlife. Vordun has both permanent and changing exhibits. One of their best exhibits is a night to remember. This is an exhibit of the titanic. It is beautifully done and extremely informative. The metaverse will also make it easier for everyday people to create museums, exhibits and art installations..
I am not aware of any real life museum having a digital twin anywhere. But with the metaverse that would truly be possible. Another idea would be for a museum to create a 3d database of their inventory. This would open up research, and give others a chance to at least virtually, to hold amazing works of art.
Museums are already using VR and AR
I can understand a museum not wanting to do a complete digital twin. But they could easily create virtual experiences not capable in the real world. The titanic experience in
Second life is a good example of this. The exhibit included examples of 3rd and 1st class living standards, as well as the iconic stairs
Virtual reality gives everyday people a chance to express themselves in ways they haven't before. I believe with the metaverse there could create a surge in creativity. There are definitely some bad aspects of the metaverse. But there are some good aspects too.
We just need to remember that the internet, social media and the metaverse are tools. We are in control of how we use them.
